YASKA (Yayasan Kanser Kanak-Kanak) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Brunei Darussalam, dedicated to supporting children diagnosed with cancer and their families. Since its founding in 2011 by health professionals and parents, YASKA has been working tirelessly to provide emotional, practical, and financial support to young patients while raising awareness about childhood cancer across Brunei.

About YASKA

Our Story

Founded on 2nd November 2011, YASKA was established by Dr. Norehan Johari (Paediatric Oncologist), Tsara’ Nawwarah Abdullah Chen (Occupational Therapist), and Carol Hancox (Parent). The organization began its journey within the Paediatric Oncology Ward (Ward 28, Level 6) at the RIPAS Hospital, Brunei’s Women & Children Centre.

Today, YASKA is run by a dedicated team of health professionals, volunteers, and parents, working together to ensure that no child in Brunei faces cancer alone.

Childhood Cancer in Brunei

Each year, around 10–15 children in Brunei are diagnosed with cancer. The most common types include leukaemia, brain tumours, and lymphomas. While some cancers have survival rates exceeding 90%, others remain difficult to treat.
YASKA works closely with healthcare providers and families to ensure comprehensive care and emotional support during and after treatment.

Testimonials

I was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor at just six months old and underwent major treatment in Singapore and at RIPAS Hospital. Though the journey was challenging, faith, resilience, and strong support helped me overcome it. I am deeply grateful to YASKA Brunei and the RIPAS Paediatric Oncology Team for their constant care, guidance, and encouragement. Today, at 17, I continue to grow, learn, and move forward with hope.
To those facing a similar journey - never give up. There is always hope.

Md Aidil Hafiy Md Nazre

I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of seven, a journey that led to the amputation of my right knee. Though challenging, this experience taught me resilience, gratitude, and the strength to create a new normal. Today, I proudly represent Brunei as a para-swimmer and use my story to inspire others and raise cancer awareness. I am deeply grateful to YASKA for their unwavering support, financial assistance, and meaningful activities that brought hope, joy, and encouragement throughout my journey.
To patients and survivors: your diagnosis does not define you - your strength does. Never give up hope.

Md Danial Hakim Harjimmey

Mohammad Ata’ullah Asytar, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma on 21 August 2024 after being a healthy child since birth. He began chemotherapy shortly after and bravely faced the challenges of treatment with remarkable strength. We are deeply grateful to RIPAS Hospital, PJSC, the doctors, nurses, and YASKA for their unwavering care and the meaningful activities that brought joy, positivity, and hope to Ata throughout his journey.
To all cancer patients and families: stay strong, never give up, and continue to hold on to hope. You are not alone.

I was diagnosed with high-risk Burkitt lymphoma at the age of 11 in 2019. The treatment journey was physically and emotionally challenging, but it shaped me into a stronger, more grateful person. With the unwavering support of my family, teachers, doctors, nurses, and YASKA, I was reminded that I was never alone. The care, encouragement, and meaningful activities supported by YASKA brought comfort, joy, and hope during my treatment and recovery. Today, at 18, I am grateful to be living a healthy, normal life—continuing my studies, reconnecting with friends, and embracing every opportunity with gratitude.

In 2022, our three-and-a-half-year-old daughter was diagnosed with ALL. After two and a half years of intensive treatment at RIPAS Hospital, she emerged strong and healthy.
We are especially thankful to YASKA for their continuous support during and after treatment, helping Eleanor transition back into a joyful, normal childhood. Today, Eleanor is happy, healthy, and thriving - a blessing we are forever grateful for.
To all parents on a similar journey - never lose hope. ❤️
